Louis Mably in whole-life term challenge
Louis Mably is instructed in a number of appeals which seek to challenge the legality of whole-life sentences. These appeals have been brought following a ruling by the European Court of Human Rights that whole-life sentences (currently reserved for ‘exceptionally’ serious offences) have to be reviewed at some stage, even if it occurs after several years. The case is being heard by five judges in the Court of Appeal: the Lord Chief Justice, the President of the Queen’s Bench Division, Lady Justice Hallett, Lord Justice Treacy and Mr Justice Bennett. The ruling could have an impact on all whole-life prisoners (52 in total).
