Katherine Hardcastle in Anne-Marie Ellement Article 2 Inquest
Katherine Hardcastle was one of two barristers acting for the sisters of Anne-Marie Ellement, a Royal Military Police officer who committed suicide in 2011. The Coroner returned a narrative verdict today, finding the factors contributing to her death included bullying the workplace, work-related despair and the lingering effects of an alleged rape. The Coroner has further announced that he is to raise concerns with the Minister for the Armed Forces in relation to the management of cases of ‘blue on blue’ rape and suicide vulnerability risk management.
Cpl Ellement made an allegation of rape against two fellow RMP officers in 2009, following which she was allegedly subject to bullying and overwork. An earlier inquest (which returned a verdict of suicide) was quashed in the High Court in March 2012. Evidence at the new Article 2 inquest was heard over three weeks in the Salisbury Coroner’s Court. The campaigning organisation Liberty acts for both of Ms. Ellement’s sisters.
