James Chegwidden represents English Bar at European Day of Justice, Munster
James Chegwidden represented the Bar of England and Wales at an international conference in Münster (Germany) celebrating the European Day of Justice from 29 to 31 October 2014. Invited by Dr Heinz-Josef Friehe, President of the Bundesamt für Justiz of the Republic of Germany, James participated in a double trial exercise at the Münster Landgericht (District Court), in which the same legal dispute was litigated via the German and then the English legal process, before a German and English judge respectively (HHJ Roger Kaye QC). The conference concluded in the historic Peace Room of the Münster Town Hall in which the Westphalian Peace Treaty of 1648 was signed, bringing an end to the Thirty Years’ War. The mock trial, the first such trial to be conducted in a German District Court, was well-reported in regional news.
