Chambers has a widely recognised expertise in the field of
human rights. Members of chambers have acted in the majority
of criminal human rights appeals in the House of Lords since
the incorporation of the European Convention on Human Rights,
including: AG Ref No1 of 2002 (reasonable time
requirement); R v. Lambert (retrospective application
of Human Rights Act): and Sheldrake v. DPP (Reverse
burdens and article 6(2))
6 King's Bench Walk has a continuing commitment to protecting
and upholding human rights. Members of chambers appear before
the Privy Council in Commonwealth death row cases.
Recent cases in which members have appeared before the European
Court of Human Rights include Phillips v United Kingdom
(confiscation), Pretty v United Kingdom (euthanasia),
and Edwards and Lewis v United Kingdom (public
interest immunity).
Members of chambers contribute to Ashworth's Principles
of Criminal Law and Human Rights Practice.
Chambers is often represented at human rights initiatives
abroad, including the British Bangladesh Human Rights Week
and Human Rights Institute seminars. Chambers is closely involved
in the Bar's project with the Jamaican Council for Human Rights
and the Jamaican Bar, which provides legal assistance for
defendants facing capital punishment. Members regularly contribute
to the Jamaican Law Reports.
In the past we have provided funds for a junior member of
Chambers to spend two months in Jamaica working on capital
cases, and members of Chambers sit on the Bar Human Rights
Committee.
