Human Rights

Chambers has a widely recognised expertise in the field of human rights. Members of chambers have acted in the majority of criminal human rights appeals in the House of Lords since the incorporation of the European Convention on Human Rights, including: AG Ref No1 of 2002 (reasonable time requirement); R v. Lambert (retrospective application of Human Rights Act): and Sheldrake v. DPP (Reverse burdens and article 6(2))

6 King's Bench Walk has a continuing commitment to protecting and upholding human rights. Members of chambers appear before the Privy Council in Commonwealth death row cases.

Recent cases in which members have appeared before the European Court of Human Rights include Phillips v United Kingdom (confiscation), Pretty v United Kingdom (euthanasia), and Edwards and Lewis v United Kingdom (public interest immunity).

Members of chambers contribute to Ashworth's Principles of Criminal Law and Human Rights Practice.

Chambers is often represented at human rights initiatives abroad, including the British Bangladesh Human Rights Week and Human Rights Institute seminars. Chambers is closely involved in the Bar's project with the Jamaican Council for Human Rights and the Jamaican Bar, which provides legal assistance for defendants facing capital punishment. Members regularly contribute to the Jamaican Law Reports.

In the past we have provided funds for a junior member of Chambers to spend two months in Jamaica working on capital cases, and members of Chambers sit on the Bar Human Rights Committee.
