Criminal Litigation

Legal 500 describes him as “in the very highest rank” in this field.  Chambers and Partners categorises him as a “star individual” for criminal work, for whom “no challenge is too daunting”.  He has appeared in most of the important criminal appeals of recent years and is regularly instructed to appear in the Supreme Court, Privy Council and Court of Appeal.  As Treasury Counsel, he acted in a wide range of high profile criminal trials.

He has also appeared in the criminal courts of Hong Kong, the Bahamas, the Cayman Islands, Gibraltar and Northern Ireland.  He frequently acts on behalf of the United Kingdom government in cases before the European Court of Human Rights.

Fraud

He is also identified as a “star individual” in this field by Chambers and Partners, which adds that he is “a phenomenal advocate, who really is superb”.  Before his appointment as Treasury Counsel, he frequently appeared as defence counsel serious fraud cases such as Blue Arrow, Barlow Clowes, Brent Walker and Polly Peck International.

Asset Forfeiture

Chambers and Partners describes him as an "absolutely formidable man" who is amongst the leading barristers of his generation in this area.  It notes that he has appeared in the majority of the cases in this area that have reached the House of Lords.

Extradition and Mutual Legal Assistance

He has acted on behalf of many overseas governments and appeared in the High Court and the House of Lords in leading cases in this field. He acts as an expert consultant to the Commonwealth Secretariat on international co-operation matters and has advised overseas governments on the drafting and implementation of their domestic legislation.  

He recently completed the Home Office review of the United Kingdom's extradition legislation with Lord Justice Scott Baker and Anand Doobay.  

Public Law

He frequently appears in proceedings by way of judicial review on behalf of claimants and defendants.

Inquests and Inquiries

He appeared in the inquests into the deaths of Jean Charles de Menezes and Mark Saunders.  He has also appeared in shipping inquiries and advised the Government in relation to public inquiries in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
